Overview

The Tufts University Core Facility (TUCF) works to provide quick and convenient services to scientists from both academia and industry. Our ongoing scientific relationships with technical consultants associated with the major instrument companies and our many contacts in the academic world and our hands-on experience enable us to provide research scientists with reliable products and results. We currently offer DNA sequencing, DNA synthesis, mass spectrometry analysis, next-gen DNA sequencing, peptide synthesis and protein sequencing.

Our facility, instruments, computing systems and software are constantly upgraded to meet the challenging needs of the research scientist. Our primary goal is to provide quality performance and experienced support, both through our products and our people.

This is a hybrid position. Once the new hire is fully trained, they may work remotely 2 to 3 days a week, depending on the needs of the department.

What You'll Do

The IT Systems Administrator is an integral member of the TUCF staff. They manage the IT infrastructure of the facility and provide software and hardware support to faculty, researchers and staff, and  (TUCF) Genomics Core. The IT Systems Administrator must have strong experience with a variety of technology including workstation and server administration and maintenance. The position requires the ability to install, configure and troubleshoot a variety of desktop, networking, and information access tools in a heterogeneous environment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Reports to the Genomics Core Manager to deliver TUCF genomics services
  • Provide CORE systems management, ensuring 24/7 uptime
  • Operates the maintenance of servers and workstations
  • Troubleshoots a variety of software in a small, highly specialized workstation environment
  • Assists in managing the NextGen DNA sequencing service by performing tasks necessary to the operation of the service such as making data available to researchers and performing basic analyses
  • Builds and maintains a laboratory information management system for the NextGen DNA sequencing service
  • Recommends and procures Desktop, Server, and Storage hardware
  • Creates reusable system documentation and user facing FAQs
  • Ensures a service-based approach to all interactions with researchers and others

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

  • Knowledge and experience typically acquired through the completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience with system administration in a predominantly UNIX/Linux based high-performance computing systems environment
  • 5+ years of experience programming/scripting
  • Strong technical skills in the configuration, installation, and troubleshooting of UNIX/Linux (all flavors), Microsoft Windows (all versions), Mac OS X 8.0 and above (including OS X server), Microsoft Office Suite, Mozilla thunderbird email and Firefox web clients, cloud based software support (Box and box sync), Telnet clients, SSH clients, Antivirus software, backup software solutions (Retrospect, Time Machine), and imaging software (Acronis and Ghost) as well as experience troubleshooting peripherals (printers, scanners) and handheld devices (mobile, tablets, PDAs)
  • Experience with IMAP, LDAP, Microsoft ActiveSync, Active Directory and group policies, data recovery tools, Microsoft 365, WINS, DHCP, DNS, and TCP/IP
  • Good verbal and written communication skills are needed to clearly convey project status to the team and customers
  • Patience for those with less technical ability is required
  • Initiative, excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities simultaneously are essential

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a research or scientific environment within higher education
  • Strong understanding of technologies used in research environments, lab instrumentation, computers and software, virtual applications (VDI, Parallels and VMware technology), and desktops, databases
