SpotOn Fence invented the Dog GPS Fence category in 2019 and has experienced commercial success as well as won awards from the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), South By Southwest (SXSW), the Stevies, & the NH Tech Alliance.
We are rapidly growing our company and seeking a Mechanical Engineer to be part of a cross-functional team designing state-of-the-art dog wearables and containment systems, as well as the means for manufacturing them. The ideal candidate has prior consumer product design experience and has created products for high volume manufacturing.
Responsibilities
- Translate product requirements into mechanical subsystem specifications and designs
- Generate innovative technical solutions to create products that meet functional and aesthetic requirements
- Develop creative design solutions to address complex problems
- Understand and communicate technical risks and implement mitigation strategies
- Create mechanical layouts and detailed part design using 3D CAD (Solidworks)
- Ensure designs are suited for high volume manufacturing and are optimized for production
- Verify designs early through rapid prototyping using in-house capabilities and third-party vendors
- Provide accurate estimates for design time and meet project deadlines
- Manage the details of transition to manufacturing including resolution of first article inspections and assembly issues
- Partner with Operations to support transition to manufacturing - whether manufacturing is done in-house or through contract manufacturers
- Support in-house manufacturing efforts by designing tooling and fixtures as needed
- Work with Test & Quality teams on life testing and validation
- Maintain thorough documentation of drawings and BOM
- Initiate and process engineering change requests as needed
- Make recommendations to Engineering team on design changes to improve quality, manufacturability or cost on sustaining products
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering
- 5+ years in product development of mechanical systems of which at least 2 are designing consumer products
- Strong 3D CAD capability, preferably using Solidworks
- Experience prototyping using 3D printers
- Experience with Design for Manufacturability, Injection Molding, & Assembly
- Material selection expertise, especially with plastics, adhesives, and fasteners
- Proven experience developing innovative approaches to complex product requirements
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to work with a multi-disciplined team of engineers to discuss design trade-offs, including developing recommendations that are based on data and analysis
- Prior wearable design experience or IoT device experience a plus
- Familiarity with Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing a plus
