Shell Pernis will go through a major transformation in the coming decades to achieve net zero CO2 emissions. The plans have been developed to drastically reduce emissions in the short term and at the same time be able to make a profit. We will do that as Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam. There's a lot going on.

What’s the role?

Maintenance is about understanding and maintaining our equipment as effectively and efficiently as possible, making sure it performs as intended. The Maintenance discipline covers the development of Maintenance strategies and the planning, coordination and execution of Maintenance activities. Maintenance ensures safe, defect free and efficient operations through the regular upkeep of equipment and tools in the most cost efficient and timely manner.

The Area Maintenance Improvement Manager (AMIM) leads the Area Maintenance Improvement team and is part of the Area Maintenance Leadership team. The role of this team is to enable process, performance and cost improvements in the area (and site) maintenance. The team consists of maintenance engineers and technical assistants (E/I, WTK, QMI). As such the AMIM is accountable for the continuous improvement of the performance of the area Maintenance Process by analysis of anomalies and identification of improvement opportunities (internally and externally) and implementation of improvement action based on these datapoints and analysis.

The improvement agenda has to be seen in the larger context of transforming Refinery Pernis to the Energy and chemicals park of the future our so called Northstar. This will means an ambitious program in terms of structurally reducing cost over the years via tactics aiming at efficiency improvement and further digitalization and introducing other innovations to build the workplace of the future.

The role of the AMIM consists of:

  • Leading a team of Maintenance Engineers (ME) and Technical Assistants (TA), where:
    • Maintenance Engineers focus mainly on the improvement of the maintenance execution process in terms of efficiency, effectiveness and cost
    • Technical Assistants in the field of WTK, EI & QMI focus mainly on the technical maintenance improvements (execution support, plant-changes, projects, BA’s & other threats) always focusing on ease of execution/cost, maintainability and reliability.

Skillpool management for ME’s and TA’s

Responsible for driving the continuous improvement processes in area maintenance such as the area KPI meetings and the DPO review process

Driving the area maintenance improvement agenda in the area maintenance team and leading the area Maintenance Leadership team meetings

Driving cost control in the area maintenance teams and providing input from maintenance in the monthly cost meetings

Responsible for the support from area maintenance to projects

Responsible for the improvement of plantchange execution in the area

Responsible for the participation of area maintenance in improvement processes such as Mitigate Threads and Opportunities, Bad Actor Process, etc.

Stand in for the Area Maintenance Manager when this individual is not available.

Accountable for the support from Maintenance to the Asset Engineer for setting up the relevant asset management (reference) plans for the PU’s the Area works with.

Shell Pernis drives for Goal Zero and the AMIM role is a critical leader role, with accountabilities for pro-active detection and resolution of potential high risk HSSE execution activities. As such strong HSSE performance is key in a demanding 24/7 dynamic environment, underpinned by visible HSSE leadership and decisiveness when faced with HSSE dilemma’s/issues that require a careful balance of commercial, technical and HSSE risks.

Relationship Management: Drives a One Team mindset; works closely with business stakeholders (Production Unit -supervisors, Asset Engineers, Engineering & Assurance leads, Other maintenance teams, Area Maintenance Supervisors and own team) to understand and influence how Maintenance and the business can align strategic success goals, challenging production to deliver value.

Leads the natural team (own staff and contractors) in Maintenance performance improvement and aligns internal and external Maintenance partners to ensure all are operating with a collective (technical, HSSE, commercial) mindset and driving measurable value. Maintains and extends networks within, across and external to organizational

What we need from you?

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or other relevant technical area
  • Preferably experience in SAP & Primavera
  • Experience in refinery and chemical technical multidisciplinary maintenance
  • Ability to do Scheduling activities
  • Experience in leading teams and passion for people development
  • Proficiency in Dutch, verbal and written, is essential for overall effectiveness in the role


To be successful in this role, ideally you are/have:

  • A technical person with HSSE leadership strengths, a commercial mindset coupled with a strong interest in the business and value delivery. Ability to take decisions that have mix of interfacing, technical, HSSE and commercial considerations
  • HSE improvement skills & learner mindset; good at driving Continuous improvement
  • Driving safe and cost competitive delivery of multidisciplinary maintenance execution scope
  • The ability to build and lead a high multidisciplinary teams aligned around driving down cost and creating greater business value
  • Capable of effective and impactful communications across topics, audiences and formats at all organizational levels. Building strong collaborative partnerships with senior business stakeholders. Resilience, courage and the willingness to challenge and manage business expectations in the context of a diverse stakeholder field
  • Experience in shaping and translating the maintenance strategy into operational delivery of successful business outcomes. And in developing business cases and in managing maintenance execution budgets
